Violence in Nagpur: Court Sends 17 to Police Custody Till March 22, Rejects Full 7 Days!

The aftermath of Nagpur’s violent unrest took a decisive turn today as a local court ordered 17 accused individuals into police custody until March 22, dealing a blow to authorities who had pushed for a full seven-day remand. With tensions still simmering in the city, this ruling marks a critical step in unraveling the chaos that erupted, though questions linger over what comes next.

Nagpur Violence Case: The court today sent 17 accused in the Nagpur violence case to police custody till March 22. The accused were produced before Magistrate Maimuna Sultana on Thursday night, during which the police sought their seven-day custody. These people have been arrested in connection with the FIR registered by the Ganeshpeth police. The court said in its order that the offences alleged against the accused are of serious nature and hence their custodial interrogation is required.

It also said that since the violence involved a mob, it would not be possible for the police to reveal the specific role of every accused at this stage. The court said in its order that the investigation in the case is at a preliminary stage and a thorough investigation is yet to be completed. Assistant Public Prosecutor Megha Burunge said that custodial interrogation of the accused is required to find out the masterminds and main culprits of the crime.

He said the accused had spread terror among the citizens and even attacked some policemen. However, the lawyers of the accused opposed the police claims and said that no specific role of those arrested has been stated and even the charge of criminal conspiracy is not included in the case. They also alleged that the police have arrested people randomly without any evidence.

Violence broke out in Nagpur on Monday night, 17 March. During this, stones were pelted on the police and petrol bombs were thrown. A total of 33 policemen, including three DCP level officers, were injured in the violence. During a demonstration organized by an organization to remove Aurangzeb's tomb, massive violence broke out due to rumors and in some specific areas, rioters attacked houses and burnt many cars and bikes.
